March 2024 Newsletter
President's Message
Greetings and Happy March!

As we look forward to the spring and more great AFP programs and events in 2024, I would like to urge you to invite your board members to our events. So often, we complain that our board members don’t help us fundraise, so let’s invite them into our world. They probably don’t know what we do every day to raise awareness about our work, write or manage direct mail appeals and e-newsletters and communications. They probably don’t know what it takes to create and sustain a social media presence or how to prospect, cultivate, and steward major donors. They might not know what it takes to carry out fundraising events or to create an annual fundraising plan.

Let us help you! The more they know, the more they will give us grace and support.

Hope to see you all on March 14 at our next workshop!

With Gratitude,
Loren

P.S.: For our nonprofit friends with small operating budgets under $2 million with less than 2 full time fundraising staff, you may want to consider a Small Nonprofit AFP membership. It’s only $125 plus a $60 chapter dues and is transferable if your development professional leaves, as opposed to the Individual Professional membership, which is $290 plus $45 in chapter dues.

Recap of the February Program
We had an amazing mixer last month at KROBĀR. Folks connected and made the most of the Vibrant Networking Opportunities available. Truly a hub of dynamic interaction, this event proved to be an exceptional opportunity for both making new professional acquaintances and rekindling previous connections. Attendees were deeply engaged in conversations; this is why we go, right?

Keep an eye on the calendar for our next mixer, you won’t want to miss it!

My love for the AFP SLO County Chapter is rooted in my love for our community. I was born and raised in SLO County and attended Cuesta College and Cal Poly. A transformative internship during my time at Cal Poly ignited my passion for philanthropy, prompting me to dedicate my senior project to fundraising for a local nonprofit organization. I vividly remember thinking, “I can’t believe people actually get to do this for a living!”

After a brief stint in the Bay Area, my heart pulled me back to SLO County, where I began my career in higher education fundraising at Cuesta College in 2016, turning that initial realization into a reality. Nearly eight years later, I am still in awe of the impactful work we do, the incredible people we get to collaborate with, and the missions we have the privilege to support. While my dedication to our community remains steadfast, I have recently expanded my work to the state level through a role with the Foundation for California Community Colleges. In this capacity, I support statewide fundraising for the nation’s largest system of higher education, which includes 116 community colleges and nearly 2 million students in the state of California.

My AFP journey, from event attendee to serving as a board member, has been truly transformative. Collaborating with inspiring colleagues, continuous learning, and actively contributing to program and event development has been pivotal to my professional and personal growth. It is a genuine honor to serve as a board member of the AFP SLO County Chapter, and I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to connect with each of you on a more personal level.
